
Nicolas Gabriel
Nicolas is Divisional Director and a member of the senior management of the Battermann & Tillery Group in Bremen, Germany’s largest firm of surveyors and average agents, established in 1913, and Network Manager of the TMN Survey Group.
He began his career in freight forwarding in 1991, before studying Logistics, Materials and Supply Chain Management at the Deutsche Außenhandels- und Verkehrs-Akademie and at Oxford Brookes University (BA). He joined Battermann & Tillery as a surveyor in 2002 and has been Divisional Director since 2014, with responsibility for worldwide survey coordination. Today he leads a team of more than 50 surveyors, coordinating cargo claims on a global scale.
As an expert for marine cargo claims, he specialises in cargo surveying, loss prevention and expert reporting across all modes of transport, with particular depth in refrigerated and frozen cargo, flexitanks and ISPM 15 wood packaging compliance.
He has supported IUMI for more than ten years and previously addressed the IUMI Conference in Berlin on flexitanks. He now contributes to the Loss Prevention Committee’s ISPM 15 working group, preparing its position paper, underwriter briefing and workshop for IUMI 2026 in Rotterdam. Through the TMN Survey Group he maintains a broad international network of surveyors and claims professionals.
