Stephan Hennig

Stephan has worked in the maritime sector for more than two decades. He has extensive experience in maritime search and rescue (SAR) coordination, and pollution and salvage response involving maritime casualties. He served for nine years as the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP). During his time working for the UK maritime authority, he was involved in the response to many high-profile maritime casualties, such as the MSC Flaminia, Hoegh Osaka, Transocean Winner, MV Kaami, and Grande Brasile. Most recently, he oversaw the response to the allision between the container vessel Solong and the tanker Stena Immaculate. Stephan is a regular speaker at maritime events and conferences. He has delivered emergency planning and response training to several coastal States and was involved in dozens of national and international exercises with partners in the public and commercial sector. Stephan coordinated the review of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Guidelines of Places of Refuge for vessels in need of assistance (IMO Resolution A.1184(33)). Stephan focuses on improving maritime safety in the interest of protecting seafarers and the environment and has worked with many national and international stakeholders in this field.
